Even though you may have been around the dating block for a few decades, communication is still key in any senior dating relationship.  Like all other forms of dating it can be challenging to get to know a new person and introduce them into your life, especially as a senior.  In many senior cases, after a loved one has passed away they may feel pressured to start dating again.  After being with someone for so many years you form your own type of communication system which must be completely erased when you begin dating again.

Communication is not easy for any relationship, young or old.  It is a partner skill that must be worked on every single day.  For senior dating, it is crucial that you go back to the beginning.  Learning to listen to your partner is the first step.  It is easy to become frustrated when either side’s desires are not being expressed properly.  One side feels helpless while the other remains in the dark.  You should be at the point in time where you feel comfortable with person with whom you are with so that letting them know how you feel does not turn into a hysterical fight.

In the attempt to help our partner, we often give them orders rather than asking them politely.  This type of mutual respect is fundamental in a relationship.  Do not accuse your partner outright but rather ask them kindly about their actions as they seemed confusing to you.  By creating a gentle atmosphere and asking questions rather than giving orders or creating accusations, you are able to create an open forum for conversation.

You should be a leading example of communication in your household.  Petty fights that would have once created a major blow out in your younger years should be dealt with in an adult like manner.  By this time in your dating process, you should be able to identify exactly what you want and what you do not in your relationship.  You should also be able to recognize whether the tiffs that you are having can be resolved with communication or if they are issues that are irresolvable.

You should always maintain your respect for your partner and demonstrate that love everyday.  Communication is key in every relationship so do not overlook this part of your partnership at any time.  With great communication this senior dating relationship will take you to incredible places in your relationship that you may have not thought possible.
